A piece of my design business that’s rapidly growing is website design. And with the help of user friendly programs like Squarespace and Wix, designers like myself create stunning websites that business owners can pick up & easily edit after the design stage is complete.
Squarespace Circle’s newsletter highlighted my personal website last month for my 404 Error page. Using some light coding, I adjusted the font on this page only to be Papyrus — a widely disliked font — and marketed it as a “designer black hole”. Touches like this may seem small, but they make a difference!
Here are a few less glamorous things I always consider when designing a site:
Little actions leave a big impact. A subtle button hover or a gentle fade-in might seem small, but they give users instant feedback and make your site feel more alive and trustworthy.
Spacing is your secret design weapon. When elements are evenly spaced, everything feels calmer and more intentional — it’s one of those invisible details people feel even if they can’t name it.
At the end of the day, great web design is about balance — blending creativity with clarity, personality with usability. Whether it’s a playful 404 page or the perfect bit of spacing, those thoughtful touches are what turn a simple website into a memorable experience.
