Examples of different text and typography

Color is often one of the first things people notice about a brand — but the strongest palettes do much more than “look nice.” Color shapes perception, influences emotion, and quietly communicates personality before a single word is read. That’s why palette development is one of the most strategic parts of the branding process for me, not just a visual exercise.

When building a brand identity, I’m thinking beyond favorite colors or trends. A palette should support how a business wants to be perceived: grounded or playful, luxurious or approachable, bold or restrained. The goal isn’t choosing colors that simply stand out — it’s choosing colors that feel aligned with the experience the brand wants to create.

A few principles I always keep in mind when developing a palette:

Color creates emotional context. Before typography or messaging is processed, color already begins shaping perception.

Balance matters more than quantity. A restrained palette often feels stronger and more recognizable than one trying to do too much.

Functionality is part of the strategy. Colors need to work across websites, print, social media, signage, and real-world applications — not just moodboards.

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that color selection is purely aesthetic. In reality, it’s one of the most practical tools a brand has. When used intentionally, color helps create consistency, recognition, and emotional connection — all before someone even reads the logo.
