Designing A Logo

For designers and non-designers alike, logos are a fascinating piece of the branding puzzle. They’re constantly researched, discussed on walks or at dinner tables, and overanalyzed.

But ever wonder how a designer starts creating a logo from scratch? There are a few important steps to take before the digital (or sometimes even tangible) pen to paper:

  • KICKOFF CALL WITH THE CLIENT: talking to the client about the look & feel of their brand is especially important. Logosare the visual messaging of a brand,so locking down that message off thebat is key.

  • NARROWING DOWN THE LOOK: something else I love to do on this call is narrow down inspiration– definite likes, definite dislikes, fonts, colors, etc. from a client. Starting from scratch means the possibilities are endless, so having these tidbits help to narrow the pool of ideas & exploration.

  • BUILD A MOOD BOARD: this is an exciting part of the process for me as a designer. The stress of the work product hasn’t yet begun & the ideas start to flow. I’ll do some research based on discussions with the client and put together a mood board of colors, fonts, visuals and ideas accordingly. Most of the time, the client actually never sees this! But it helps me as a visual to see how to begin.
